I had wondered why Harper had the surgery prior to the bowl game instead of waiting until afterwards. Turns out it's pretty simple - according to this story on SI.com Harper wouldn't have been able to play against Auburn without the surgery.
Of course, that begs the question, why risk a hurried recovery and further injury by playing him in the bowl game?
